AI for Health is a multidisciplinary team within UMC Utrecht dedicated to the responsible and impactful implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Our mission is to bridge the gap between promising AI innovations and their practical, safe, and meaningful use in clinical practice. By working closely with clinicians, patients, and technical experts, we ensure that the solutions we develop are not only technologically sound but also truly add value in real-world care settings.
Our way of working is built on a strong foundation of quality and compliance. The AI for Health team develops software under a dedicated Quality Management System (QMS) aligned with ISO 13485, ensuring that AI and software as a medical device (SaMD) solutions are safe, effective, and meet all legal requirements. This system incorporates key standards like IEC 62304 for software development, ISO 14971 for risk management, and includes AI-specific practices such as the Leidraad AI and the Impact Assessment Mensenrechten en Algoritmes (IAMA). The QMS supports faster, safer innovation and is now fully embedded within the team, with the first projects completed and ISO certification in progress. It’s also available hospital-wide, enabling other departments at UMC Utrecht to build AI responsibly and with the right support.
As a team, we focus on projects in three areas of application: reducing administrative burdens, providing clinical decision-support, and optimizing operational processes. Examples of these include AI-generated discharge summaries, Automatic Mitosis Detection and predictive models for patient no-shows. More detailed descriptions of these, and other projects can be found under their dedicated webpages.
